Just wanted to pop in and say Merry Christmas to all…we got 5 inches of snow yesterday in northern Oklahoma, which was fab for my mother in law (here from San Diego)…she’d never seen snow falling before!
My MIL is here visiting for Christmas, and we thought we’d take her to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert in Oklahoma City yesterday. Yes, we realized it was a rock opera, but Mom is pretty jammin’ for her era, and we thought it was something we’d all enjoy.
Not so much. While I did enjoy two of their songs, the rest were a disappointment. To begin with, throwing the word “orchestra” in there is pretty damned misleading. Yeah, there is an actual orchestra, but you can’t hear them beneath all the bass and electric guitars. And there are two violinists cavorting around the stage, but none of us were actually sure they were playing while they were center stage, because we couldn’t hear them.
Then we get to the “message” of the whole concert. It was preachy and completely overdone. There’s not much more to say about it.
Lastly, the whole thing was an hour and a half of grandstanding, singing solos, guitar solos and copious hair flipping (aka 80’s hair bands). There was so much of the stuff I just mentioned, that the three of us spent the entire 90-minute drive home pretty much dogging the whole thing and making it into a “story” that we’ll have for some time to come.
I guess that’s something good to take out of it, if nothing else.
In the end, if you have the chance to see a Christmas concert of this kind, go with Mannheim Steamroller–MUCH better bang for your buck!
